A Harris County jury sentenced a woman to 27 years in prison Thursday for brutally stabbing her husband to death as part of a bogus home invasion.
“Sandra Melgar hacked the life out of her husband Jaime, and for that she will spend the balance of her life on a cell block,” Assistant District Attorney Colleen Barnett said.
“She showed no remorse,” Barnett said. “The sentence is just.”
Melgar,57, was convicted of first-degree murder following a more than two-week trial in the 178th District Court.
She stabbed her husband with a knife multiple times during the December 2012 attack, which occurred the night before the before they were to celebrate their wedding anniversary.
Melgar developed an elaborate rouse in which she managed to tie her hands behind her back, fake her own bondage, and sought to collect a hefty life-insurance policy.
“I want to thank all the sheriff’s department investigators, whose tireless efforts helped the jury see through this woman’s convoluted scheme,” Barnett said.
In addition to the 27 year sentence, Melgar was fined $10,000.
