Woman charged with capital murder in death of daughter

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office charged a woman Monday with capital murder for stabbing her four-year-old daughter to death.

Laquita Lewis, 34, is scheduled to make her first court appearance Tuesday. She will be formally advised of the charge and her rights during an arraignment hearing in the 339th District Court.

The single mother of four has been denied bail and faces life in prison or the death penalty if convicted.

“Our heart goes out to a four-year-old girl named Federica Allen, her father, siblings and other family members,” Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg said.

“The unnatural act of a mother killing her own child is among the toughest for society to comprehend.” Ogg said.

The district attorney’s office accepted the capital murder charge Monday.

Lewis was charged in November with the misdemeanor of making a terroristic threat for a Thanksgiving incident in which she brandished a knife at her 16-year-old son.

Lewis, who at the time had no prior criminal record, was sentenced in February to 15 months of deferred adjudication in that case.

As part of her probation requirements, she was required to take a Texas Risk Assessment System evaluation, which ranked her with a score of zero, the lowest score, for her risk for recidivism.
