DA and Police Efforts Lead to Extradition of Alleged Sexual Predator
Houston, TX -- David Jaime Romo was extradited from Mexico and booked into the Harris County Jail on June 9, on allegations of Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child, Harris County District Attorney Patricia Lykos announced Thursday.
The Jacinto City Police Department filed charges against Romo on August 31, 2006, and a Harris County Grand Jury returned an indictment on October 20, 2006. Until his recent arrest, Romo remained at large since that time.
In February 2008, the Harris County District Attorney’s Office received a request from Chief A.M. Ayala of the Jacinto City Police Department for assistance in the apprehension of Romo. Chief Ayala provided specific information regarding Romo’s location in Jalisco, Mexico.
Using that information, Kim Bryant, Extradition Administrator for the DA’s Office, submitted a request for an extradition arrest warrant. The U.S. Department of Justice then filed the request with the Mexican government.
Romo was arrested in Mexico in January 2009 pursuant to that arrest warrant. Bryant then submitted the formal extradition packet to the Department of Justice which in turn filed that with the Mexican government on March 4, 2009.
Once the Mexican court system approved the extradition, the U.S. Marshals Service was notified and federal agents transported Romo to the Harris County Jail on June 9, 2009. Romo remains in custody in the Harris County Jail in a “No Bond” status.
“We are pleased to work with the Jacinto City Police Department, the Department of Justice and the U.S. Marshals Service in returning this dangerous defendant to custody so that he may stand trial on this serious charge,” said District Attorney Lykos in making the announcement.
